Australian-based sad girl Elizabeth has released a new video covering Fleetwood Macâs âGo Your Own Wayâ. She takes the upbeat original and makes it her own slow, remorseful, overflowing ballad of sorts. The video is fuzzy and soft filled with strawberries and tarot cards. She looks deep in our soul, singing into the camera, at the window, face in hand like Juliette waiting for something to happen.
When I asked Elizabeth what she was doing today, she told me she would lay in her bed with her boyfriend reading Joan Didionâs âThe Year of Magical Thinkingâ. Which basically means sheâll be laying in her bed with her boyfriend thinking about death. I am also currently reading that, but I sit alone in my house thinking about death. Whoâs the real sad girl?
We got to talk to Elizabeth about what itâs like living in Australia, some of her favorite albums and why she chose âGo Your Own Wayâ.
What inspired you to choose âGo Your Own Wayâ to cover?
I have just loved this song so much since I was a teenager. Rumours is probably one of my most influential albums, not even musically, just because I love how heightened the emotional drama is behind the stories of the songs. I relate to that kind of writing. Go Your Own Way just perfectly captures that feeling of loving someone so much and realising that itâs still not going to work.
I see in your music video you were reading tarot cards. What one did you pull that day? What did it have to say about you?
The cards in the video are cards that Iâve been pulling a lot over the last year, which has been a pretty huge time of change for me. Some of the cards that I pulled are the tower; leaping away from chaos, three of swords; heartbreak and betrayal, six of swords; moving on but carrying baggage. The reading ended with the sun, the card that I feel the most inside. A reminder to stay light in the face of difficulty. I have it tattooed on my arm, you might spot it in the video.
What has made you into the sad girl you are now?
Many things, many choices and many destinies. when I talk about being a sad girl, I donât think of it as being glum all the time. I think of it more as someone who feels emotions in a very intense way, someone who is sensitive to melancholy. Maybe a sad girl is not made, she is born.
Whatâs your favorite thing about living in Australia?
Being with my friends and family, sunsets, summer nights with the windows open.
If you were taking a roadtrip – what albums would you bring?
Steely dan – canât buy a thrill, Lana del Rey – born to die, Nina Simone – Baltimore, Lady Gaga- chromatica
What are you going to do today?
Lay in bed with my boyfriend and my tiny dog, reading The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion, windows open.
