Premiering exclusively on LADYGUNN, Philadelphia-bred, Brooklyn-based synth-pop artist Rena serves up a sticky-sweet dose of girl power in her new video, “Colors.” Drenched in hyper candy-coated colors and bursting with a kaleidoscope of trippy, light-stained visuals, the ultra feminine DIY clip oozes with the nostalgia of youth and innocent rebellion.
The artist explains, “I wanted the video to be young and playful while showing elements of spirituality; the setting with the lava lamp is actually an alter that I built in my bedroom. There’s also some footage cut throughout of my travels over the past year. For me, it’s a journey through who I was and who I’ve become. The morphing sequence symbolizes the world ever-changing, and the evolution of the self.”
Sonically, “Colors” is all fizzy synths and psych-pop; an aural concoction of sugary electro-pop and cerebral punk awash in glimmering melodies. The empowering track, as Rena explains, “is essentially about the veil of deception being lifted. It’s mostly about relationships, whether with people or things, and realizing that you can’t have expectations. It’s difficult to do, but I try not to have any expectations, because almost all of the time things don’t turn out the way you thought they would, for better or worse.”
We’re looking forward to what this bright emerging artist has in store for us next. And, as it turns out, so is Rena. “In the past I spent a lot of time looking for defining moments, but I finally realized those moments don’t really exist,” she reveals. “I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m in a constant state of evolution, and as long as I’m moving forward, I’m fine with that.”
