TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS / TROUBLE

Casablanca Records (2012)

review/ LOGAN BRENDT

Performing under the name Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, DJ and producer Orlando Higginbottom knows how to get people talking…and dancing. You may be familiar with TEED for his remixes of Lady Gaga or Friendly Fires. Now with TEED’s highly anticipated electronic dance debut album entitled Trouble, he’s beginning to usher in his own hits. Trouble incorporates 1980s video game sounds that are often found in the dance music genre, except TEED has injected it with soul. Possibly you were one of the 1.5 million Youtube viewers for TEED’s video “Garden” that displays his unique quality to stand out among the inundation of all the other dance music out there.
Unlike a lot of DJs, Oxford-based TEED actually sings throughout the album as well. His voice is pleasantly relaxed which balances the noise quirks that dance music like this contains. This makes it agreeable to those who aren’t typically fond of the dance music genre. With this approach, TEED is taking over the success that the likes of Calvin Harris has achieved.
“You Need Me On My Own” off Trouble is chilled out with intriguing lyrical content while “Tapes & Money” is faster paced. The purely instrumental track “American Dream Part II” could  backdrop the dream of an American teenager who just wants to dance, while “Your Love” which is a funky track features female vocals comparable to those in the 1993 hit song “Show Me Love” by Robin S.
This is the kind of Trouble you can get into.
