VIDEO PREMIERE: TRACE "YOU DON'T KNOW ME"

Alt-pop songstress Trace premieres a new music video for her track “You Don’t Know Me,” and brings  introspection and social commentary along with it. In a cultural landscape which fetishizes GIFs and social media tools as a means to create personal narratives, Trace’s video is shot entirely in Boomerang format. It is “colorful but not happy,” which to a certain extent breaks through the artifice of shiny happy social media personas to reveal the monotony and boredom that is their true byproduct. Coupled with the lyrics of the track, this video amplifies the message that these public glimpses into our lives do not reveal the whole story of who we actually are.

“I uttered the words ‘you don’t know me!’ to myself after experiencing someone giving me the cold shoulder all of a sudden,” Trace recalls. “It felt out of character and random and maybe dramatic, but it happened. Assumptions were made about me and I never had felt so misunderstood. Kind of heartbroken but like the universal kind and not necessarily a strict romantic sense. And as a woman who is always honest with anyone and about anything, I learned sometimes that is still not enough. People can and will choose how they interpret you, experience you, etc. It takes a lot of work to know someone. Thus, this song came about. And with that, I wanted the song’s production to feel
‘liberating’—like an anthem, if you will. I felt like, yeah, this would be a dope song for women to just sing at the top of their lungs.”
