With a rich history in both film and music, Jackie Cruz’s honorable, approachable nature makes her a new kind of pop icon.
JACKIE CRUZ is a three-time SAG Award winning actress, an entrepreneur, and exquisite vocalist. Named one of the “Top Latino Powerhouses under 40” by The Hollywood Reporter in 2013, Cruz is perhaps best known for her role as Marisol on Netflix’s critically acclaimed series, Orange is the New Black.
The songbird, who has been trailblazing her way through the film industry, has recently crossed over to music. Cruz’s debut album entitled “Hija De Chavez,” was just released October 11th and it’s already amassed over 600k streams.
The groovy nine track releases features fusions of Latin pop, contemporary beats, and soul. Fresh and catchy as ever, the album is an ode and dedication to the powerful women in Cruz’s life who helped raise her. As she tells Hunger Magazine, a near-death accident had her rethinking the definition of beauty.
“We all learned a big lesson: that beauty comes from within. It’s something we learned together through my pain and my mother’s pain after my car accident. I was inspired by my hard-working, strong, female-surrounded upbringing with Tia Madeline, Tia Lucia, Tia Millie and Zitzy.”
Cruz is thriving as a multi-faceted artist and voice, but her end goal remains to lift up others. In an effort to create more diverse opportunities in the media, the Dominican-American actress promptly started her own production company, Unspoken Film. It’s due time for everyone to see more colorful Latinx on screen.
Of course, this leading lady hasn’t stopped there. As an independent and accomplished music artist and songwriter, Jackie has also created her own record label, Dulce Records. With 1.6 million on Insta and a dedicated fan base, Cruz’s career continues to evolve.
