She has recently presented her most recent single, “FEEL IT,” a high-energy track that blends the rush of melodic dubstep with the sensitivity of modern pop and showcases what she can do not only as a DJ but also as a vocalist and songwriter. The song serves as a sneak peek into what ALLEYCVT’s debut EP will be like. The record, also named “FEEL IT,” will be released on October 2. She will also take stages pretty soon since the FEEL IT Fall Tour is starting next September 28th in San Diego, CA.
We had the opportunity to chat with ALLEYCVT herself in an exclusive interview where we discussed her music, her creative process, and projects, especially those related to the release of her single “FEEL IT,” her upcoming debut EP, her awaited tour, and what the future holds for her.
Can you elaborate on the overarching theme or concept behind the EP, and how the title track embodies its essence and vibe?
The concept behind this EP & the tour came from all of the ups and downs I’ve experienced in the past few years of my life. I’ve experienced wonderful things, as well as things that were tough. Through this journey, I’ve realized that bad things can never be as bad as you think they are, because they’re a necessary thing that needs to happen in life for you to experience good. You could say it has the essence of Yin and Yang, how the good and bad are almost a neutral part of life. Thinking of things that way makes life a little easier to handle when things get hard. I just wanted to capture all the feelings I’ve felt during the past few years in this new body of work and my tour.
I believe the title track is very cinematic and captures how dramatic those ups and downs feel when you’re experiencing them in the moment.
What is the inspiration behind the high-energy party anthem “FEEL IT”?
I was very inspired by Charli xcx-dance-pop basslines for the verses, and then it explodes into dubstep in the drop. I think the dichotomy between the two sonically is really cool and embodies what the project is trying to convey, which is how contrasting life can be. I also really wanted to grow my production skills on this one. I think it’s one of the hardest songs I’ve released.
“FEEL IT” is a captivating blend of hard-hitting dubstep and emotive vocals. Can you elaborate on your songwriting process for the track? How did you balance these contrasting elements to create a cohesive and impactful sound?
The songwriting on this one was so fun. I was more focused on the melody of the vocals rather than overthinking the lyrics. I wanted them to sound very siren-like and dramatic, to just make the listener (for lack of better words) FEEL the song!
Another thing I wanted to add is that this song went through 8 completely different versions. At first, I liked it, and then I hated it, and I loved it, liked it, HATED it… and that process repeated so many times and I changed it so much that it was sending me into a little bit of an existential crisis. I think it’s funny that that whole process happened though, because it reflects what the song is about. I essentially got what I asked for when writing the song.
With “FEEL IT” you aim to create an impact in the music landscape, but also support organizations that create a positive change in the world. Can you tell us more about how you plan to do so and why you have decided to do it?
For my tour, I’m working with One Tree Planted, which donates $1 out of every ticket sale to planting a tree in a place that needs it. This includes places affected by natural disasters like forest fires, and also helps out with places affected by food insecurity, unsuitable air & water quality, and many other things. So not only are they helping the earth and wildlife, but they are also helping communities grow and prosper as well. I’m stoked to be doing this because taking care of our planet is the biggest thing I stand for.
Let’s do a creative exercise. If you could materialize “FEEL IT,” what would it look like or what would it feel like to touch it?
I think FEEL IT would look like a rollercoaster, maybe a theme park of sorts. You’re just traveling through every emotion and memory you’ve ever had, and are looking back on it and reflecting while also living in the moment and having a good time. It goes really fast and has huge drops and there’s a lot of bright, vibrant colors and flashing lights!
The EP is set to release on October 2nd. Can you elaborate on the experience of creating your debut EP on a damaged computer? How did this challenge inspire you, and what lessons did you learn from the experience?
It’s pretty challenging. It still is! I haven’t been able to get it repaired yet because it would take a week, and I’m still putting the final touches on the EP. I think it’s been a lesson in patience for me. It’s hard not being able to work on planes, especially when there’s a time crunch and I’m going from show to show. I’m just really happy my hard drive was okay. If anything though, I think it makes me a stronger person and just is a further reminder of what this whole body of work is about. It reminds me to take a step back, breathe, and realize that everything is figure-out-able! (and have multiple back-ups for all of my hard drives lol)
The “FEEL IT” North American Tour is just around the corner, kicking off on September 28th in San Diego, CA. What are you most excited about for this upcoming tour? What can fans expect from the live shows?
I’m really excited about the new music, the new visuals, and the better sets. I feel like I have grown so much from my last tour to this one and I’m stoked to take my fans on this journey with me. I’m also just the most excited to see their smiley faces again!!
Your music is known for its emotional depth and raw intensity. How do you translate your personal experiences and emotions into your songwriting?
I try to put everything out on the table when I write. It’s definitely a form of therapy for me to talk about my experiences and feelings through music and have other people relate to it too. I try not to overthink it too hard (TRY to lol).
As a female artist in the electronic music scene, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
I think we’re super under-represented in the space, and in life in general of course… but I like to consider myself just a DJ/producer/songwriter. This might be controversial, but sometimes I don’t love how women are put into the box of “female DJ” or “female producer”. Nobody says “female lawyer” or “female doctor”. We are all DJs and girls throw down just as hard as the boys do! There are people that attribute my career to surface-level things, which is annoying, but nobody gives me a greater challenge and obstacle than myself.
Looking into the future, what are your goals as an artist? What are the next steps for ALLEYCVT?
My goals for the future are to inspire other people to produce and DJ, as well as to donate more to environmental organizations & hopefully do some more cool partnerships! At the end of the day, I really just want to get better at producing and make better music as time goes on, and also be able to build out future tours with a lot more production.
ALLEYCVT has not only crafted a set of breathtaking tunes but she has also proved what she is made of since she had to create it on a broken computer. After an accident that involved her laptop and her mother’s car, she had to continue producing, writing, and turning her experiences into complex soundscapes on damaged hardware. Rather than stepping back, she used this event as inspiration, using a smashed computer for the EP’s cover art.
