As Clive Casey gears up for the release of his debut album, “Pinche País,” Australian artist Clive Casey is releasing yet another powerful track/video, an anthemic acoustic piece titled “Away.”
“Away” begins with a soft, almost melancholic piano melody, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, that sets the mood for what’s to come. The intro is reminiscent of the Pixies’ haunting cover of “Que Sera Sera,” evoking a similarly emotional tone. Casey’s vocals start just as gently, but as the song builds to the chorus, he delivers a powerful surprise—an explosion of sound and raw emotion as he belts out the title with all his might: “AWAY!” The rhythm accelerates to match the intensity of his voice, only to swiftly calm down again, creating a striking contrast between peace and chaos.
Serving as the lead single of “Pinche País,” “Away” is a fascinating song that blends Alexi Murdoch’s soft acoustic intimacy with The Rolling Stones’ bold, in-your-face energy.
“In my intervening teenage years growing up in Melbourne, the challenges of living in such a vastly different space slipped from my memory and left me with the romantic ideal of the place and my early formative experiences. Away is about returning as a young adult to connect with a place and old friends I loved, only to find memory and reality collide. It’s about myself and my friends facing very different choices as we entered adulthood.” Says the artist.
Casey draws heavily from his Australian heritage, infusing his music with a unique perspective that offers listeners not only a glimpse into his creative world, but also an intimate look at what it means to be Australian—the essence of life in the country and the experiences that come with it.
Accompanying the song, Casey has also released a music video that visually encapsulates its themes. It seamlessly blends raw footage from the stunning Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory with shots of Casey performing in a single take against an industrial backdrop. This striking contrast between the untouched, vast landscapes of the desert and the stark, mechanical setting of his performance mirrors the emotional journey of “Away”—highlighting the tension between nostalgia and reality, as well as the struggle between cherished memories and present-day challenges. The desert imagery symbolizes a longing for connection and the beauty of the past, while the industrial backdrop represents the harsh realities of the present. Casey’s debut album, “Pinche País,” is set for release on March 28.
