GUEST PLAYLIST: Sophia Black's Smooth R&B Jams

by Erica Russell

Japanese/Native American artist Sophia Black creates the kind of soulful, timeless R&B that steeps slowly into the cerebellum, infusing a sense of warmth and sensual atmosphere. We asked the emerging Los Angeleno to curate a rhythmic guest playlist of her favorite hip-hop, R&B, and experimental electronica.

And just for good measure, don’t forget to take a listen to the artist’s own track, “OVR AGN,” below as well. You won’t regret it.

BASECAMP – EMMANUEL – STWO REMIX
“If you’re familiar with their music, this remix is awesome. I recommend using headphones when you listen to this song because it sounds three dimensional. That might seem like it doesn’t make any sense… but trust me, try it and you’ll understand.”
CHET FAKER, FLUME – DROP THE GAME
“As a songwriter, I think this song is SUPER hooky! I find this song stuck in my head at least twice a day.”
JAI PAUL – BTSU
“An oldie, but a goodie. Yup, I’m taking it back to the myspace days. This song made me feel like such a badass in middle school.”
LOVELY BLOODFLOW – BATHS
“This is the type of song I usually gravitate towards when it’s raining. So simple and calming.”
PILOT JONES – FRANK OCEAN
“Frank Ocean doesn’t just write songs, he writes stories. This song is a great example of lyrical perfection, he’s basically saying ‘you make me high’ without directly saying it. It’s genius.”
DRAKE – DOING IT WRONG
“Drake kills it on this song. Also, Stevie Wonder does a harmonica solo at the end, need I say more?”
RALEIGH RITCHIE, THE INTERNET- STAY INSIDE – THE INTERNET REMIX
“You can’t help but move your head from side to side whilst making the stank face when you listen to this song. It has some great chords!”
DARIUS – HOT HANDS
“If you like Disclosure, then you will love this song! It’s very up-tempo, and will keep you dancing!”
BANKS – WARM WATER (SNAKEHIPS REMIX)
“Banks’ voice is so beautiful, and Snakehips does a fantastic job on this remix.”
MNEK – EVERY LITTLE WORD
“I don’t even know where to start with this song. Besides the epic key change in the middle of the second chorus, this song gives me hope that 90’s R&B is making it’s way back into pop music.”
