Today we bring you THMPSN’s take on this vibrant genre taking the world by storm and his journey so far, check it out:
Phonk has been around for a little over a decade now and is definitely gaining traction. However, the sound has been developing. How would you define phonk’s core characteristics for someone completely new to it, and what do you think makes it so appealing?
Phonk’s core characteristics include the prominent use of cowbell, distortion, and chopped vocal samples. What makes Phonk particularly popular is the sudden drop, with no build-up, making it ideal for creating social media content with sharp transitions. Its fresh sound appeals significantly to the car community, especially with Drift Phonk, adding a dynamic and energetic vibe to automotive videos and events.
You’ve got a background as a classically-trained violinist – how has it influenced your approach to producing this phonk?
My classical training on the violin has influenced my Phonk productions by consistently featuring violin in the tracks that I record live. My background also helps enhance my songwriting and melody-writing skills.
Coming from an orchestral/classical background, did you ever find some pushback from the people around you when you started working with electronic music and sampling?
The funny thing is, the people at the top of the classical world whom I know love what I’m doing and find it super exciting and fun.
Can you share more about the creative process behind your remix of “PULL THE TRIGGER” with RAIZHELL?
When I first heard RAIZHELL’s track, I knew I had to record a violin part and create an orchestral section for it. I sat in the studio, recorded my violin, and added layers, it was a super fun creative experience. The process flowed effortlessly. From there, everything else fell into place naturally.
How do you balance your roles as a musician, content creator, and animal guardian in your daily life?
With great difficulty. I have definitely taken on a lot more than I can handle at times. But I wouldn’t change it at all.
How do you see the future of phonk music evolving, and where do you see yourself in that landscape?
I believe Phonk will eventually be mixed with other genres like house and trap, making it easier to perform at major festivals and further boosting its popularity.
Lastly, what’s up next for THMPSN?
I have a new song dropping every two weeks, each accompanied by a music video. Additionally, I have several major collaborations coming up that I believe many people will enjoy.
