J Appiah Takes a “Look Back” to Keep Moving Forward

Second-generation Windrush child J Appiah has carved out a unique space in the UK music landscape with his eclectic fusion of acoustic-driven R&B, blending soulful tones with a pop-rock edge. Deeply influenced by the rhythms of his Ghanaian heritage and the dynamic energy of East London’s music scene, J Appiah reflects on his journey, offering insights into the complexities of life and the passage of time.

J Appiah’s artistry has been enriched by his international touring experience, including a notable stint with Gorillaz. Beyond music, he has founded 19Fifty7, a platform dedicated to uplifting Black creatives and fostering a community that celebrates diverse voices and unique perspectives.

The latest release from J Appiah’s “That’s The Thing About Time” EP is the single and music video “Look Back.” The track features much of J Appiah’s signature acoustic guitar backing (a welcome rarity in the genres he mostly moves in) and his exquisitely refined soul-drenched vocals.

Written during his time in Ghana, “Look Back” can be both about nostalgia and reassessment. Good or bad times alike hold the story that shaped us into who we are, and both of them can be a source of resilience in the present and the future, highlighting the importance of moving forward ever without an inch of regret or bitterness.

The lyrics blend a reflective tone with motivational guidance, creating a sense of reassurance. J Appiah’s use of repetition emphasizes the urgency of these messages, reinforcing the idea that life is about embracing the present and looking ahead. While change is inevitable and more often than not necessary, it can be a painful process and an unwelcomed one at times, so J Appiah is reminding us to cherish love and warmth while pursuing new beginnings.

Directed by Yasmine Godo, the music video for “Look Back” explores the passage of time, a core theme of J Appiah’s “That’s The Thing About Time” EP. With the sun as a guiding symbol, the visuals seamlessly merge ethereal elements with everyday moments, celebrating the interplay of nature and culture. Yasmine’s vision creates a cinematic experience that feels delicate yet powerful, employing surrealism to engage the audience and break the fourth wall. J Appiah adds a playful twist by stepping into the role of a cowboy, a figure that embodies adventure and the spirit of defiance against convention. This persona reflects his fascination with outlaws and those who live outside the norm, navigating challenges with grace and a unique outlook.
