I know Danielle Bouchard from Myspace. Well, actually we grew up in the same area with the same group of friends, but essentially like many other pseudo-relationships in 2006, the barren social platform is where I first heard of the 5’2” red head with a killer singing voice. Now in her 20s, Danielle is the singer for Oh Honey, the latest alt pop duo to come out of the Atlantic Records/Fueled by Ramen label (she’s also graduated to Instagram like the rest of the world) and her career is exploding.
Social media has made it so you can witness a person’s growth first hand and I’ve seen this one grow from singing in a coffee shop to having a song with 4 million plays on Spotify in what seems like a good night’s sleep. After a myriad of appearances in magazines, commercials, and popular morning shows, the band, comprised of founder Mitchy Collins as well as Danielle, is playing for the first time ever in her hometown. As you would imagine, it’s weird coming home after an exhausting year, especially now with a very big dream which has quickly turned into reality.
Danielle, what is like for your first time playing in your hometown?
Danielle: It’s exciting, it’s very cool. We’ve toured for the last straight year, and we never came to Albany (NY). It’s really overwhelming but incredible to see family and friends and people that haven’t seen in a long time.
So how did you get to this point in your career?
Mitchy: We started the band two years ago, and I was trying to get a duo together. I connected with Danielle and I realized she was the missing link. Then Sirius XM played one of the songs and everything started happening.
D: That’s when the labels starting calling. We ended up signing with Atlantic in February and then we were pretty much on the road from February through August. It was my first time on tour. It’s been kind of crazy but it’s incredible.
What was tour like?
D: It was awesome, I love getting on stage and playing for new people every night. It was hard being the only girl on tour, but I figured it out. I take days to myself to go get my nails painted or whatever.
So what’s the dynamic like between you two, anything that bothers you about one another?
D: He’s like my big brother. He just sort of teases me a lot. Also, he always begs us to watch a movie and then within the first five minutes he’s sleeping!
M: What annoys me about Danielle? Other than everything? Just kidding. I don’t know. I hate the smell of her nail polish.
On a personal level, how have things changed for you?
M: You definitely have people that would never give you the time of day, hitting you up like “oh we should hang out.” You definitely find out who your friends are.
D: Yeah, it’s weird, even for my sister. People from high school who were mean to her are now nice. It’s just a weird dynamic. Like he said, though, you find out who your friends are.
And the last and maybe most hard hitting question, who are your respective MCM and WCWs?
D: Definitely Emma Watson, I’m a huge Harry Potter nerd. It’s a thing.
M: Ryan Adams. He’s like the most famous person you’ve never heard of.
At this stage in the game, the trajectory of this band seems to be going nowhere but up. With genre-crossing, catchy songs like “Be Okay” and brand new EP ‘Wish You Were Here’ already getting rave reviews, you’re definitely going to be seeing more of this charming duo.
