San Holo is leading the resistance against bottled pop and EDM. The breakout beatmaker and label-head gained international recognition when his Trapnation remix of Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode“, broke the internet with over 160 million streams, and counting.
Since then he’s created other smash hits of his own persuasion, probably best known for his heavy hitting single “Light.” that went #1 on Sirius XM’s flagship dance channel BPM for 7 straight weeks. Other singles like “The Future,” and “One Thing.” have cemented his status as a genius in the dance world. For the last few years, his place has been on stage, playing the festival circuit and amassing hundreds of thousands of fans for his energetic performances and electro-mindful music that transports you to dreamy matrix worlds with sharp background guitars, rounded out with dancing drums.
Today we premiere “Right Here Right Now” which features his bitbird label mate Taska Black and chat with the artist about his dizzying soar to the top of the charts.
Love the video for “Right Here Right Now…which begs the questions, what is the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?
Thank you! I’ve had fans drive like eight hours straight to a venue and back home just to see me perform. That doesn’t really happen in Europe and it’s just so crazy to me. Also, someone gave me this plant while I was playing Tomorrowland. I’ve had never had anyone give me a plant haha.
Where would be a dream place for you to hear/ have your music played?
Ooph, tough question! I’m lucky enough to have already got to hear my music played out in some amazing places. Maybe like at a basketball game or a Superbowl commercial would be pretty cool!
You are a long way from Zoetermeer, how often do you go back to visit and have they named any streets after you yet, or given you a key to the city?
Haha! There’s no place like Zoetermeer to be honest. It is the ugliest and most beautiful city at the same time. I was born there and it’s the place I like to call home. No streets names or keys to the city yet though!
I have a great idea, you, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg do the score for the next Star Wars…thoughts?
Dope! Literally. How do we make this happen?
When your music started blowing up were you surprised or did you have initial feedback when you started that let you know you were on the right path?
When I started out I just put the songs up on SoundCloud with no expectation whatsoever. I was really surprised when things like my ‘Don’t Touch The Classics’ remix series started blowing up. I’m still shocked that my Dr Dre remix has 160 million plays on YouTube.
What is the craziest thing that ever happened to you while were performing?
So I was playing Tomorrowland last year and I saw someone in the crowd waving with this plant. After like 15 minutes all I could see was that plant. So I took the plant from her, grabbed my mic and said: “Make some noise for this plant!” And now there’s a video of that moment with 3 million views haha!
What were you listening to growing up?
I listened to a lot of rock/indie stuff. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Bloc Party, Editors, etc.
Is it hard running your label bitbird. What are the pros and cons for you of having your own business?
It can be hard at times but over the last year we’ve hired some great staff that handle the day to day operations, and at the end of the day it’s really gratifying too. It’s so cool to support all kinds of artists. Whether that be guys like DROELOE or Analogue Dear. We don’t believe in genres, only in good music. Music that moves and provokes us in a certain way. All businesses have cons, but I think having my own business has a lot more pros than cons.
Let’s end this with a message from you to the world.
Hope you guys enjoy my new music video! Had a lot of fun making this one with Taska. Oh, and expect a lot of new music throughout the rest of the year and maybe even an album.
